{"id":5179,"date":"2010-11-24T00:20:48","date_gmt":"2010-11-23T16:20:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/?p=5179"},"modified":"2020-08-26T12:36:24","modified_gmt":"2020-08-26T04:36:24","slug":"mindtouch-core-deki-wiki-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/mindtouch-core-deki-wiki-review\/","title":{"rendered":"MindTouch Core Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 240px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 240\/212;border: 0px initial initial;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/HLIC\/8e4bdc680c8433f9c8d1b3be89d6876a.jpg\" alt=\"Community Scoring Curation Analytics\" width=\"240\" height=\"212\" border=\"0\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/>I recently got the chance to try out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtouch.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MindTouch Core<\/a> by installing it on my Windows Vista machine.<small> photo credit: Roebot<\/small><\/p>\n<p>In case you haven&#8217;t heard of MindTouch Core\u00a0(formerly known as Deki Wiki), it&#8217;s basically a free and open source <a title=\"Free task &#38; team collaboration tool\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"nofollow\"   style=\"color:#1e73be;\"href=\"https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/recommends\/zoho-projects\/\">collaboration<\/a> platform which is ranked as one of the top open source projects in the world.<\/p>\n<p>MindTouch Core is implemented by many <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"nofollow\"   style=\"color:#1e73be;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inflowinventory.com\/?plid=27260\">organizations<\/a> for the following key purposes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Team sites<\/li>\n<li>Social intranet<\/li>\n<li>Enterprise wiki<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge base<\/li>\n<li>Documentation <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"nofollow\"   style=\"color:#1e73be;\" href=\"https:\/\/partners.webydo.com\/6wdx17ttbarj\">development<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Enterprise collaboration platform<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MindTouch is available in three editions namely:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Software download (self hosted)<\/li>\n<li>Shared cloud (10 &#8211; 50 users)<\/li>\n<li>Dedicated cloud (50 &#8211; unlimited users)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To install it on premise, there are installers available for Windows and Linux operating systems and\u00a0a prebuilt VMWare virtual machine is also available for download.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like to quickly evaluate MindTouch, I would recommend the free 30 days trial of <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.mindtouch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MindTouch Cloud<\/a> where you can gain access after filling in the required details. The only drawback to this approach is the required billing details where you&#8217;ll be charged after 30 days.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For those who prefer not to enter billing details, just download the universal installer and install MindTouch on your machine.<\/p>\n<p>I downloaded the MindTouch Installer (about 87MB) and installed it on my Windows Vista without any problems.<\/p>\n<p>Once installed, MindTouch will send you a license key for product activation purposes after which you should be able to try out MindTouch Core.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5216 lazyload\" title=\"MindTouch Control Panel\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/MindTouch-Control-Panel.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"306\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/MindTouch-Control-Panel.png 500w, https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/MindTouch-Control-Panel-300x184.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 500px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 500\/306;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Initially, you&#8217;ll be logged in as the administrator of MindTouch Core and shown the control panel where you can create groups, add roles, users and even customize the open source collaboration tool.<\/p>\n<p>I was more interested to find out how the system would look like for users, so what I did was create a user called Bob and signed in as Bob.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5217 lazyload\" title=\"MindTouch User View\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/MindTouch-User-View.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"351\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/MindTouch-User-View.png 500w, https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/MindTouch-User-View-300x211.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 500px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 500\/351;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the user&#8217;s screen, thing got a lot more clearer to me as I could see the various features and capability of MindTouch Core.<\/p>\n<p>My first thought about MindTouch is that this system is very Wiki like whereby people can easily add new content and share information.<\/p>\n<p>After learning a little more about MindTouch, I found out that contributers and administrators can spice up the collaboration platform further by adding in apps, templates and extensions which can be easily added via the control panel.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the app catalog has 149 entries for contributers \/ developers to work on and integrate into their system. Some of the apps include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Task List<\/li>\n<li>Simple Blog<\/li>\n<li>Bug &amp; Issue Tracker<\/li>\n<li>AJAX Twitter Widget<\/li>\n<li>AJAX Discussion Forum<\/li>\n<li>and more&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although I didn&#8217;t get a chance to successfully add an app into my system, I managed to add in new content \/ pages and this is how it went.<\/p>\n<p>Clicking on a new page, I get to select a page template.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5218 lazyload\" title=\"select page template\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/select-page-template.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"294\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/select-page-template.png 499w, https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/select-page-template-300x177.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 499px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 499\/294;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click on the Create new page button and you can add content via the WYSIWYG editor.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5219 lazyload\" title=\"add new page\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/add-new-page.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"325\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/add-new-page.png 494w, https:\/\/www.softwareforenterprise.us\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/add-new-page-300x197.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 494px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 494\/325;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the information has been added, this particular page will be added into the system and you should be able to access it from your left side bar.<\/p>\n<p>All pages allow comments to be added to encourage user collaboration and discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Another cool feature is the page notifications where by users can subscribe to receive email notifications whenever a page has been updated with new\u00a0information.<\/p>\n<p>The only downside that I noticed is missing within MindTouch is document management and workflow. I&#8217;ve searched in within the apps catalog but couldn&#8217;t find any.
